The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera - L'elisir d'amore
“L'elisir d'amore” is one of most prominent works by Donizetti. Dynamic and rich with beautiful melodies, it has been admired by listeners for more than 170 years, and the composer’s masterpiece Una furtiva lagrima, a romance of Nemorino, belongs to the world’s classical musical heritage.
The Russian premiere of the opera took place in St. Petersburg in 1841, 9 years after the world premiere in Milan. The opera has been on the stage ever since. “L'elisir d'amore” is of particular importance for The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera because music by Gaetano Donizetti is closely associated with the theatre’s history and artistic career its director Yuri Alexandrov. In 1987, in its first season, the theater presented two operas by Donizetti – “Rita” and “Il campanello di note”. Then came “Viva la Mamma” (original title is “Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali”), “I pazzi per progetto” and the greatest masterpieces of the composer, “Don Pasquale” and “Lucia di Lammermoor”. It is Yuri Alexandrov who returned from oblivion “Pietro il Grande zar di tutte le Russie” an early opera by Donizetti (the Russian premiere of the piece was held in The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera), and, in the year of the composer’s 200th anniversary, initiated Donizetti Festival, featuring the Russian premiere of Requiem by Donizetti.
The repertoire of the theater includes scenes of many operas written by the composer including “Maria di Rohan”, “Anna Bolena”, “Maria Padilla”, “Linda di Chamounix” and “Lucrezia Borgia”. “L'elisir d'amore” is one of the most famous operas by Donizetti. But staged by Yuri Alexandrov in The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera, this masterpiece sparkles with new colors. For this is what Alexandrov is like: in every opera score he skillfully finds something new, unexpected, exciting ...
